The History of Walking Canes

The History of Walking Canes

Walking canes have been a part of human history for centuries, used by people from all walks of life. Their use is not restricted by region, economic status, religion or gender. The styles may vary from place to place, but the idea remains the same: from time to time, people need a little extra support.

In addition, canes and walking sticks have been used as symbols of wisdom and authority, and have been wielded by pharaohs, kings, presidents, and let's not forget the occasional Jedi master. Some have been used as symbols of religious authority, held by popes or other religious leaders. And still others are nothing more than fashion statements.

We have put together this handy infographic to take you through the history of walking canes, and highlight some of the noteworthy people who have held them, both real and fictional.
